Welcome to Tablescape Thursday! Today’s tablescape is dedicated to my sweetheart, Mr. Bleu. Poor Mr. Bleu’s birthday often gets interrupted by Winter weather, and this year was no exception. You see, he was even born during an ice storm. His father was a Highway Patrolman and was working car accidents caused by a terrible ice storm. Another trooper had to take Mr. Bleu’s mother to the hospital. From then on, Mr. Bleu was given the nickname of “Slick.”
Last Friday, due to a looming ice storm, we celebrated the grand occasion at home. I wanted to make the evening as special as possible considering the circumstances. I decided to cook a special dinner and bake Mr. Bleu’s favorite cake…lemon poppy seed. The table also had to be special. Therefore, I decided to go with a blue and white theme accented by red.
I chose not to use an underpinning and let the wood tones of the table lend a more masculine feel. Burlap placemats and plaid cloth napkins also helped to reinforce this look.
Spode Blue Italian plates were used for the placesetting.
Red roses placed in a blue and white pitcher and flanked by blue and white candlestick holders make up the centerpiece. Red apples also help to add a little more red to the table.
The dinner menu consisted of filet mignon, garlic mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, sliced tomatoes, and hot rolls. Of course, we had to have Mr. Bleu’s favorite cake…lemon poppy seed cake with extra lemon glaze.
Thank you so much for stopping by today. I hope that you have a beautiful day!!!
Shannon, Happy Birthday to Mr. Bleu! Your blue and white table is just beautiful with the pops of red and the masculine feel! The blue Italian Spode is a favorite of mine. Your cake looks scrumptious, please share the recipe…Happy Thursday!
Thank you, Pam. The cake is really easy to make, and believe it or not it is low fat. You simply take a lemon cake mix ( I prefer Duncan Hines), add 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/3 cup of sour cream, 1/4 cup of water, 1 cup of plain yogurt, 1 cup of egg substitute, 3 tbsp of lemon juice, and 2 tbsp of poppy seeds. Pour into a greased bundt pan and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until tooth pick comes out clean. You do not have to glaze the cake. It is delicious on its own, but Mr. Bleu loves lemon glaze. In fact, I make extra-lol. The glaze is just 1/2 cup of powdered sugar to 2 tbsp of lemon juice.
Awww……what a nice AND delicious Birthday celebration. The table looks beautiful and that poppy seed cake!!! Wow!!
Thank you, Rebecca! I hope that you enjoy your week!!!
Beautiful table for a very special Birthday celebration….Happy Birthday Mr. Bleu…I am sure that he preferred a meal cooked by you for his birthday and that special cake too….So maybe the ice storm was a good thing and being born during an ice storm?….I guess that is history repeating itself.
Thank you, sweet Shirley! It was really kind of nice celebrating at home, and I love to cook so it wasn’t a bad thing after all! I hope that you enjoy your week!!!
The table is blue-tiful and that lemon poppyseed cake looks super yummy… even thought it’s late here I could totally go for something like that right now. Stay warm in the snowstorm!

So pretty Shannon! I prefer to spend special occasions at home, such a great time to set a beautiful table and cook some fabulous food! Happy birthday to Mr. Bleu! I can relate, I grew up in Connecticut with a Dec birthday and it always snowed and messed up my party 🙂
