An Early Summer Tablescape in the Garden

Happy Tuesday, dear readers! I hope that this month of June finds you in good health and enjoying pleasant weather. We have had a stormy and cloudy spring and are jumping right into summer with warmer temperatures and high humidity.

Gardening has been quite a challenge this spring with so much rain and little sunshine. To add to these problems, the typical garden pests have appeared earlier than usual. Japanese beetles, snails, spiders, and grasshoppers have become regular lunch guests by helping themselves to my flowers and plants. Gardening is something that I enjoy doing, but it is not for the faint at heart. There are wins and losses, and sometimes it seems that there are more losses than wins. However, when you do win, it can bring such happiness and a sense of accomplishment.

To celebrate the upcoming arrival of summer, I am joining my friends to bring you our tablescapes to welcome the season. Our most gracious hostess is Rita who authors the blog Panoply. A list and links to all of the beautiful tables can be found at the end of this post.

Since the sunshine finally decided to show its glorious face, I chose to set my table in the gorgeous outdoors surrounded by all of God’s handiwork. With all of the rain, everything is so verdant and colored in a rich green. Our fescue grass is definitely a favorite of mine. Mr. Bleu is diligent about reseeding it each fall so that it rewards us in the spring and summer months.

A summer plaid tablecloth topped with an April Cornell table runner and placemats provided the perfect backdrop for my setting in the garden.

The plates were purchased at an estate sale a few years ago. A box of assorted pieces was sitting all alone for a very low price of $7. I know…. I didn’t need any more dishes, but they just had to come home with me. The dishes are marked Bavaria, but I am unsure of the pattern name. I adore their delicate pink floral design. Anything with a pretty floral pattern makes my heart sing!

The flatware is by Reed and Barton, and the stemware is Dublin by Godinger.

The floral bouquet is made up of blooms from my gardens. Oakleaf hydrangeas, Endless Summer hydrangeas, coral drift roses, English Ivy, butterfly bush blooms, dahlias, and calla lilies were placed into a vintage depression glass pitcher.

“Just living is not enough…one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.”-Hans Christian Andersen

“Beauty surrounds us, but usually we need to be walking in a garden to know it.”-Rumi

Below is a favorite spot where I love to sit, reflect, and take in all of nature’s gifts.

My sweet friends, I am thankful that you joined me in the garden today. I hope that you have found a little peace and joy to add to your day. May you have a most blessed and joyous day and wonderful week ahead. Please be sure and visit my friend’s beautiful summer tables. You will find all of the links listed below.

Shannon I love your bright table and all its components. I especially eyed the swing in the background and could see myself sitting there gently swinging enjoying all the beauty. around me. So I was glad to hear that it is one of your favorite spots. I really wanted to grab one of your goblets of ice tea…hoping it was sweet tea of course. One can not live in the south without drinking sweet tea can they? Your plate stack if lovely and what a find at $7.00…you really found a bargain…I am not usually that lucky. I like the dainty flowers are the plates. Thank you for joining this hop and giving us a view of your beautiful garden. You never disappoint. Have a wonderful Summer my friend.

  3. First of all, your plates were a fantastic find. You are a lucky duck! I like how the flowers are bright and complement your bright table linens. I love the colors, and I especially love how you decorated your swing to match. So cute! I love how bright your hydrangeas are, too. Mine are all pale blue and purple this year.

    Happy summer!

  4. Shannon, what a pretty color palette you selected! I love the pairing of your rose dishes and colorful tablecloth and the quilt on your swing really creates perfect summer vibes–pinned! Blessings, Cecilia @ My Thrift Store Addiction

  5. I love your color palate, Shannon, and the way the point is carried from the table to the swing extending your garden. the blooms are gorgeous. It's so nice to be able to gather a bouquet from your own garden. The vibrant color of the flowers melds well with the tablecloth and placemats. The pink dishes were a real find and look lovely on your table. Thanks for sharing your garden with us.

  6. Shannon, you know I love color and this table makes happy. The summer plaid tablecloth looks fabulous mixed with the floral AC table runner and placemats. The charming Bavaria plates were a steal at $7.00. The floral bouquet of hydrangeas, coral drift roses, English ivy, butterfly bush blooms, dahlias and calla lilies is stunning! Your swing looks so inviting, a perfect spot to sit, reflect, and take in nature’s beauty.

I understand your gardening woes! It is always a treat to pull up a chair at one of your tables, sweet friend! Happy Summer!

  7. Such vivid colors on your garden table and what beautiful dishes Shannon! I wouldn’t have been able to pass them up either at the price. I adore your garden bouquet and pretty swing! What a relaxing spot to read and listen to the birds. Garden is definitely not for the faint of heart and requires a lot of sweat equity…I did my fair share of sweating this morning. 😊

Here’s a fun tip to help identify something that works most of the time. If you’re on a laptop, right click on the image and click ‘search image with Google’. The search results will help you identify it. Your dishes are made by in Bavaria by H&C Heinrich and the pattern is "Rosalinda”! As always, it’s a treat to join you at the table! Happy almost Summer 💗

  8. Shannon, such a delight for the eyes.i adore your bright colored tablecloth and those amazing pretty plates you got at a bargain. Your florals are fabulous, especially hand picked from your garden. I also have those Dublin goblets. How lovely to be able to sit in your garden and enjoy a meal Al fresco. Gardening is a lot of hard work, but it does pay off. Always a pleasure hopping along with you.

  9. How beautiful Shannon! I love love the bright colors! Your grass is gorgeous and those flowers wow, your garden labor really paid off, the arrangement is stunning! I love the AC linens and your pretty estate sale plates, the plates blend with the linen patterns perfectly~ that swing looks so inviting!

  10. Shannon, what a bright and cheerful summer table. I love your combination of patterns on this bold colored tablescape. And your floral centerpiece really is the ideal piece to bring it all together. The contrast of your dainty floral plates is a great choice to the eye-catching tablecloth and runner. A match made in heaven. Now you can rest some time on the outdoor swing with the floral pillows and cozy pink quilt. I can envision myself swinging in the cool shade while taking in the floral eye candy of your table. I definitely need no reminder that it is summer. Enjoy!

  11. Shannon, your bright and cheerful table is perfect to welcome the summer season! I love the mix of the AC linens with the plaid tablecloth – so pretty. Those plates were definitely a lucky find at $7.00 and the pattern is so delicate. I don't think I would have been able to resist them either. Your flowers are gorgeous and the swing in the background is just perfect for enjoying your beautiful yard and gardens. It was a pleasure hopping with you and I hope you have a wonderful summer!

  12. Shannon, your backyard oasis is beautiful! I am a huge fan of lush grass, and that is one benefit of so much rain (and, of course, Mssr. Bleu's diligence!). Your tablescape and florals are outstanding! Your coral drift roses make me realize (and after necessarily replacing one of five original to my cottage home confirms this), that mine are peach drift, even though they appear coral to me in various stages of bloom. Your coral is definitely a brighter hue throughout. All the other flowers in bloom give me anticipation of those to come in my own garden (hydrangeas are blooming, but butterfly bushes are just buds).
The Bavarian china is beautiful! I often find china does not sell well in estate sales (or the antique mall either), but it has never stopped me! The tiny roses are such a sweet complement to your bolder April Cornell blooms of the placemats and runner. Your swing looks like the perfect place anytime of day, but I bet mornings and evenings are the best.
Shannon, thank you for joining the summer tablescape blog hop and delivering your French finesse to the artistry!

  13. Shannon, I'd love to join you at your colorful garden setting. I know your garden challenges are frustrating, but your garden looks lush and inviting. What a perfect spot for lunch. Your dishes are lovely and a great find. Not important if we really don't need more dishes. They bring joy! April Cornell linens are always appealing to me. Thanks for having us. If you find someone relaxing in your swing, it just might be your friend from Texas. Happy Summer!

  14. Shannon, what a lovely backdrop to set a pretty table! I love the colorful linens and how well they complement the gorgeous vase of flowers from your garden. Oh to have all those blooming at once! I think it's a shame that young women don't seem to want to use or even inherit beautiful china. (Luckily my daughter is an exception!) But it certainly benefits us dish-lovers! The rose-patterned plates are lovely. Enjoyed hopping with you

  15. Shannon! Your summer table is such a wonderful bright and cheerful place to gather!! I love the wonderful plaid tablecloth with your vivid flowered placemats it just makes such a statement. Not to mention, I think everyone can use a little April Cornell in their lives🤣😂 Your swing looks like the perfect spot to spend a summer afternoon reading, just lovely. I hope you have an amazing summer☀️😎

  16. Shannon – I LOVE the bright layered color on your beautiful table! You always give me new ideas, and this one is the stunning color and pattern mixture that I would have never thought of! I'm seriously going to run out and get me something bright and pretty to do another Shannon-Copy-Cat table! Thanks for another round of total inspiration! Always fun hopping with you my friend! Happy Summer!

  17. Shannon, I am late commenting! But I finally arrived to see your bright and cheerful outdoor table. I love the AC placemats and runner! They go so nicely with the tablecloth. What a beautiful place to dine al fresco!
Thank you for the inspiration! Happy week to you and take good care!

  18. Oh, Shannon, your garden is lovely! What an enviable array of blooms you are growing!!! I am in the planning stages of establishing a garden – we'll see how it goes! You are so right, gardening is not for the faint of heart!! I am a big April Cornell fan too and I love your placemats and napkins – they are so bright and cheerful – perfect for a summer party!! Thank you for giving us a seat at your table. ~ Hugs ~ Jennifer

  19. What a lovely spot for a summer meal Shannon! I love the deep jewel tones of your linens. They really are eye catching. Your china is such a pretty pattern. Very summery indeed. And, how lucky to have all those blooms to create such a gorgeous arrangement. Up here in the north, things are just starting to bloom in earnest so it will be another few weeks before the garden is in full bloom! I could easily see myself enjoying dinner and then spending the evening with a good book on the swing. Happy summer to you!

  20. What vivid colors ushering in summer🌺🌸🌼
