Tablescape Thursday: The French Asparagus Plate

Welcome to Tablescape Thursday! I am so anxious to share this tablescape with you. It is all about the French Asparagus Plate. You see, the French love their asparagus so much, that they have so affectionately dedicated plates to it.  If you are a lover of French Antiques, I am sure you are familiar with the Majolica French Asparagus Plate.  You can pick up most any French Country decor book and find them beautifully displayed in china cabinets, open shelving, or in lovely wall displays.  I have always admired them, but they can carry a pretty hefty price tag.  The only ones I have seen in person were at Round Top, and they were a pretty penny.

Recently, while shopping Etsy, I found five of these plates at an unbelievable price.  In fact, I purchased all five, including shipping and insurance, for less than what one plate would have cost elsewhere. Guess where they came from….France!  It is fascinating how many different shops are on Etsy, and there are even European ones. My plates arrived in ten days and in perfect condition. There was even a sachet of French Lavender tucked into the package.

I was told that my plates date between 1890 and 1920. Each plate is hand painted with wonderful saturated color.

I chose a simple blue, green, and yellow plaid tablecloth for the underpinning of the tablesetting. The colors go wonderfully with the rich saturated colors on the plates.

Each asparagus plate is anchored by a cream colored Mikasa plate. The pattern is English Countryside. I selected simple mason jars for the glasses and accented each place setting with a pretty yellow napkin.

Below is a close up of the French Asparagus Plate. Each one is hand painted and unique in its own way. There is even a well on the plate for the hollandaise sauce.

For the centerpiece, white flowers were placed in a silver tea pot and perched upon a cream colored platter of asparagus.

I am so happy that you stopped by today. I hope that you have a blessed day and a very happy weekend!!!

  1. Shannon, this might be my favorite Tablescape that you have shared! I am swooning over the French asparagus plates…they are absolutely beautiful! The centerpiece of white flowers in the silver teapot with the platter of fresh asparagus is so perfect. The table linens accentuate the beauty of the majolica! Just perfect!

  2. Ms. Shannon how cool is this? I love the English Countryside pattern. The way you combine your settings are just so elegant. You & your family have a blessed day as well. Congratulations on your relocation. 🙂 Family is everything!

  8. Oh how wonderful! Those plates were a great find! I am assuming you didn’t actually eat off them… although my antique dealer friends say they do and use plastic utensils so they don’t scratch the plates! I just like to set them out and then eat on the underplate! So lovely, thank you for sharing with us all!

  9. What a beautuful table! Here in North Italy asparagi are very good, and we also have tipical plate for them. We tipically eat asparagus and boiled eggs only with salt, pepper, olive oil and parmesan cheese. Very simpl and tasty!

    • Thank you, sweet friend, for the very kind comment! Guess what I have been eating for breakfast this week? I took your suggestion and paired the asparagus with boiled eggs, olive oil, and parmesan cheese. It is very tasty! Thanks for the great idea! I hope that you are having a wonderful week!!!
