Savoring Summer's Final Days and Anticipating Autumn's Arrival

Welcome to the annual Fall Tablescape Blog Hop featuring fifteen beautiful tables to inspire your autumn celebrations. This fun event is hosted by the talented Rita from the blog Panoply. Links to all of the tables can be found at the end of this post.

With miserably hot temperatures forecasted for several more days, it seems that autumn may be slow to arrive. I enjoy summer, and I am often sad to see is go. However, this year our temperatures have been miserably hot. I am not one to wish time away, but I must admit I am anticipating autumn’s arrival and cooler weather.

With the sweltering heat, I decided to set my table celebrating early fall in the dining room. A French tablecloth, Crown Linen Designs ruffled placemats, and Ralph Lauren floral napkins provide an easy color palette to transition from summer into early fall.

“There is a time in the last few days of summer when the ripeness of autumn fills the air, and time is quiet and mellow.”-Rudolfo Anaya

“And the sun took a step back, the leaves lulled themselves to sleep and autumn was awakened.”-Raquel Franco

For the place settings, I combined Mikasa English Countryside, Spode Rosebud Chintz, and Johnson Brothers Friendly Village plates in various sizes. The glassware is Dublin by Godinger, and the flatware is Michalangelo by Oneida.

My Johnson Brothers Friendly Village tea set sits at one side of the table ready to serve up a cup of cinnamon spice tea.

A tiered plate stand filled with apples from a local orchard sits at the other end of the table. I think apples are just as much a part of autumn as pumpkins.

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”-F. Scott Fiztgerald

“I loved Autumn, the one season of the year that God seemed to have put there just for the beauty of it.”-Lee Maynard

Early last Saturday morning, I had the pleasure of visiting a local flower farm where you could pick your own flowers. It was early enough in the morning that the weather was just right, and I had so much fun choosing flowers for my bouquet. Cosmos, sunflowers. amaranth, quail grass, and lemon basil were chosen for an early fall arrangement and placed in a light green basket perched on a Johnson Brothers Friendly Village platter. I wish you could smell the lemon basil. Its fragrance is heavenly.

Flanking the centerpiece is a set of antique English barley twist candlesticks.

My dear friends, I am so happy that you joined me today to savor the last days of summer and anticipate autumn’s arrival. Your visits and comments are always a joyous part of my day.

I wish you a most beautiful, blessed day, and a wonderful week ahead!

The combination of Mikasa English Countryside, Spode Rosebud Chintz, and Johnson Brothers Friendly Village makes a lovely plate stack. I also enjoyed reading the Autumn quotes .

Shannon I agree that apples are as much a part of autumn as pumpkins., We visited our daughter in Olympia Wa in Fall that has the best farmers market and there was barrel after barrel of fresh apples. I wanted to chose one apple from each barrel but that would have been too many for me to carry. I so love the vase holding your flowers. What’s is it made of?

  3. I have always loved the colors of autumn. So warm and soothing…. Getting ready for the colder months of winter.

Beautiful table! Mikasa English Countryside is my wedding every day selection and still my favorite all these years later! JB Rose chintz is on my wish list and Friendly Village is a long time favorite – so this table makes my heart smile! Beautiful flower arrangement and as always such a pretty table.

  5. I love your middle plates: They are so pretty, and I love the red flowers. They look so pretty with your floral napkins. Your dining room is so pretty: Your color choices are stunning! I also love your collection of dinnerware with the autumn scenes on it, especially the cute tiered server with the apples. I love apples, especially for fall decor. Happy fall!

  6. I would like to know the size, if it is a square tablecloth and where it can b purchased. The table is beautiful!!

    • Hi Sandy! Thank you so much for your sweet comment. The tablecloth is a rectangle and is 60×98. I purchased it several years ago online from a company called La Cigale. They sell French table linens, and you can find them at http://www.lacigale-usa.com. I have had my tablecloth for several years, and I own many of their beautiful linens. They are of really nice quality. I hope this helps. Sorry, I am so late responding. With school starting back, I have been extra busy. I hope you have a wonderful week! Take care!

  7. Shannon, your tablescape is charming! I also have Friendly Village dishes and I love how you've paired them with late summer blooms. Happy almost fall, Cecilia @ My Thrift Store Addiction

Shannon, Though we are motorhome bound, I wanted to take the time to visit this blog hop. I have to say that your combination of Mikasa English Countryside, Spode Rosebud Chintz, and Johnson Brothers Friendly Village caught my eye immediately. What great choices and to set it all up in your lovely "new" dining room. I like all things Fall including apples, pumpkins, nuts and other fruits….I think it is because our seasons in Florida are not as pronounced as those up North which by the way is beautiful right now. Have a wonderful week and thanks for the beautiful quotes too. I never tire of any kind of prose.

The other linens contrast with the tablecloth nicely and bring more fall colors. The flowers casually arranged are a cheerful centerpiece! Happy Fall!

  14. You have created a beautiful entry into Fall, Shannon. I enjoyed reading your post about changes in your dining room and they worked well for this tablescape. I was struck by that glorious floral centerpiece and how it pulled the colors from the china. The combination of the yellow plates with Friendly village pieces works well. the tablecloth is a nice rich tone that picks up on your draperies. Happy Fall!

  15. Shannon, your beautiful table speaks to my English Country loving heart! Your plate stack is so pretty! The combination of patterns and colours is perfection! The ruffled placemats are a favourite for sure. Placing your tablecloth on the table the way you did is such a great idea. I agree with you on the apples! Apple picking is the first fall activity I look forward to every year. I wish we had a local flower farm where we could pick our own. Your selection is spot on for fall!

  16. Shannon, I believe apples are truly the harbinger of autumn's seasonal harvest, and what a beautiful combination and theme you've created here. The plate stack is a winning combination! It looks so great with the CL placemats and RL napkins on your French red tablecloth. You must have a complete set of Johnson Bros Friendly Village based on what I'm seeing here. The tea set pieces are the more desirable ones requested in our antique mall, I can tell you that. And a beautiful "you pick" bouquet from your local grower makes for a well rounded, overall French look, true to your lovely style.
Shannon, thank you for joining the welcome fall hop and for bringing your talents to the table. I hope you enjoy some cooler days ahead with the season approaching.

  17. Shannon, I love that you can go into your garden and cut flowers for your table. I grew up in a home with fresh cut flowers from my mother's garden. If I'm lucky enough to have things blooming I try to do the same. Your Friendly Village, Rosebud Chintz, and English Countryside all give a cozy feel to welcome autumn. As always, it's a pleasure to join you at your table. I always enjoy seeing shots of your pretty dining room. Happy Fall!

  18. Shannon, your table is just lovely. The French tablecloth is so pretty and I love the wonderful mix in your plate stack.. The Johnson Brother's Friendly Village is such an awesome pattern. The flowers are beautiful and how wonderful to have a local u-pick flower farm near by. I can only imagine the scent from the lemon basil; have you tried lemon thyme? It is heavenly as well. It was great hopping with you and wishing you a happy almost fall.

  19. What a lovely tablescape. We have a lot of the Friendly Village dishes and tablecloth.
