STYLING THE STAIRWAY

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful Labor Day weekend.  Here in Oklahoma, it has been a little unsettling.  On Saturday, at 7:02 a.m., we had a 5.6 earthquake.  I was sitting in my living room reading when I heard a loud noise. Thinking it was a huge wind gust, I turned around to look out the window. However, the trees weren’t moving. Startled, I turned back around and everything began to shake violently.  It lasted for about a minute. I was totally stunned. I have felt a couple of the small earthquakes, but never anything like this. Living in Oklahoma my whole life, I’m use to the threat of tornadoes.  I have my storm cellar, and when severe weather is in the area or forecast for the day, I am weather aware. However, with an earthquake, there is no notice.  I’m so fortunate that nothing in my home was damaged. I’m still in amazement that nothing was broken.

Other than the earthquake craziness, I’ve had a great weekend.  My oldest son turned 19 on Saturday. To celebrate the occasion, we took him to his favorite restaurant for a birthday dinner. I also worked on several projects which gave me a great sense of accomplishment. One of the projects I worked on this weekend was decorating my stairway landing. It is not a large space, but it is big enough that it needs some attention. Today, I thought I would share with you how I chose to decorate my landing.

I’ve had this painting for several years, and I love it.  I was trying to find just the right place to hang it in my home. I wanted to place it on the stairway landing, but it was too small.

Therefore, I placed two ornate mirrors on each side of the painting. I also added a decorative piece of iron over the top of the picture.

I have had this accent table for 16 years. I love the shape of the table and color of the wood.

I placed this chest under the table. It wasn’t very attractive so I painted it a blue color, added some metallic craft paint to the accents, and distressed it to give it an aged look. I placed some greenery and a bird’s nest on top of the chest. I also added a tassel.

Lastly, I accessorized the top of my table.

On one end of the table, I placed French looking candlestick holders with some flame less candles and an antique book.  I love using flame less candles when decorating. Candlelight makes such a beautiful glow, and flame less candles are a safe alternative to using real candles. They even have candles you can put on a timer.

In the middle of the table, I placed a collection of blue and white pottery. I added red apples to the bowl for a pop of color.

On the other end of the table, I placed a blue and white vase with red roses.

  1. Your painting of the roses in the vase is beautiful. So glad you found a special place for it.

  2. Glad you are ok after the quake! I have been in one in Central America years ago and it was bad. Your painting looks perfect with the things around it and I love the chest because I just love boxes, chests, etc. 🙂 And the tassel makes it fun. Happy Labor Day!

  3. Glad you’re alright after the quake! I have only experienced a quake once when we were living in NB and it was very small. Still everything was moving; pictures on the walls, etc. Rather unsettling!
Your vignette looks totally pulled together and I love the little chest with the bird’s nest. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day.

    Blessings,
    Sandi

  5. Shannon, your home is so pretty!! We are about to start building a new house and I definitely want to incorporate more French country again. In our last house we had a lot of French country but it didn’t seem right in this one.
