Happy Wednesday, dear readers! I hope that you are having a wonderful summer. Our summer has been a good but busy one filled with family time, travel, and a few home projects. All of which I hope to share with you soon.
The summer season has flown by at lightning speed. In May, our daughter Caroline graduated from college with honors and a 4.0 grade point average with a degree in psychology. In addition, she earned her degree in only three years. This summer she has been busy participating in a tribal health internship with the CDC. Two hundred seventy college students across the United States applied for this program, and only fifty were chosen. It was quite an honor and accomplishment.
Caroline is passionate about mental health and chose building resilience against substance abuse in Cherokee youth as her topic. We traveled with her to Atlanta where she presented her project at the CDC. My daughter has such a caring and loving heart, and I know that she will make her mark helping others. I am so proud to be her mother.
Monday, we moved her into her first apartment as she will be starting graduate school this month. Although, I am so happy for her, I miss her something terrible.
In June, Mr. Bleu and I celebrated our 30th anniversary and took a trip to mark the occasion. I plan to tell you more about our trip in a future post. In addition to celebrations and travel, we have tackled a few home projects that I also plan on sharing with you soon. For today, I want to share our recent bedroom renovation.
We purchased our home five years ago from a couple who had the home custom built. It has taken me five years to finally get this room the way I want it. This room is the most difficult room in my home to decorate. The layout is strange, and there aren’t many options for furniture placement. No home is perfect, and each one has its quirks. I’m just grateful to call this one my home. I chose Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore for the wall color. This summer wood flooring was added to the living room and sitting room and new carpets to the bedrooms.
Bedding and curtains can cost a pretty penny. Therefore, I resorted to bargain shopping to save money. The Jacobean print comforter and curtains were on clearance from Dillard’s, and the coverlet was on sale from Ballard Designs. I adore mixing and matching fabrics, textures, and colors to create a cohesive and interesting look.
The pillows were custom made from Nell Hills. If you have never visited Nell Hills in Kansas City, the second floor is dedicated to bedding. It is some of the most gorgeous custom bedding ensembles you will ever see, but it can be quite pricey. I went with a little more of a high-low project for my bedroom redo.
The vintage secretary is an estate sale find. I am not one to subscribe to trends and believe that you should decorate with the things that you love. My home has a collected over time vibe, and that makes my heart sing.
The secretary houses part of my majolica collection along with other treasures. When I purchased the secretary at an estate sale it was full of decor. After I brought it home, I realized that the back of the piece was covered with white, stained fabric. I panicked but quickly came up with a solution. I had just enough of this pink houndstooth fabric left over from reupholstering the French chair to cover the back of the cabinet. Mr. Bleu was also a good sport and helped me with the project.
I have had the Bombay chest for over twenty years, and it works perfectly as a bedside chest.
This is the only wall that will accommodate our bed. It isn’t wide enough to fit a bedside table on both sides. So, I looked high and low and finally found a narrow one that would work on the opposite side. Sometimes, you just have to think outside of the box.
I was fortunate enough to inherit my grandparent’s bedroom furniture. This highboy is a favorite of mine and is Cherry Grove by American Drew. I have the rest of pieces in a guest room. Flanking the highboy are two antique chairs purchased at estate sales and favorite pieces of art.
Sweet friends, I am so happy that you stopped by for a visit. I will be back soon with more details on our summer travel and home projects. As always, thank you for your visits and kind words. Have a most happy and blessed day!
Oh wow. Just wow. This room makes my heart sing too! Well, first of all, congratulations on the extraordinary accomplishments of your daughter. (And she is beautiful, too!) Please give yourself some credit for her turning out to be such a remarkable young woman. Every single inch of your bedroom is perfection. I LOVE that you don't subscribe to trends. (Neither do I!) All of the pieces come from different sources, but because you have your own, perfectly honed vision and style, it all works together, absolutely perfectly. I could write paragraphs more, but I would probably eat up your whole 'Comments' section. Please know that your posts are a special treat, and I am always so delighted when you show up in my inbox. Hugs!
Kristine, thank you so much for your very sweet comment! You are too kind! Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!
The bedroom makeover is gorgeous! RHill, TX
Thank you so much, Rachel! I hope that you have a wonderful week!
Good morning, Shannon. Congratulations to Caroline upon graduation. She is beautiful and smart. I know as parents, you are proud of all her accomplishments.
The bedroom is gorgeous and your new find is fabulous with your collection of majolica. The room is stunning with all of your French style. When I saw the American Drew Cherry Grove highboy, I gasped. When Butch and I married we bought the highboy and the four poster bed and we still have both pieces. They are timeless. You know I love the Palladian Blue, it is my dining room color. The Jacobean fabric for your windows and comforter is lovely against the wall color. I can’t wait to read of your travel in an upcoming post.
I so enjoyed my visit this morning, sweet friend!
Thank you so much, dear friend! I hope that you have a wonderful week ahead!
So lovely, Shannon! I love everything you did. Your secretary is gorgeous and with your beautiful majolica collection it is stunning. You also did a great job shopping for bedding. Your room is definitely all together!
I enjoyed hearing about your daughters honors and plans. I know you are proud of her.
Thank you so much, Bonnie! I hope that you have a wonderful week ahead!
I would like to know if your lamps r even or is one higher than the other because of your tables being different heights?
Hi Sandy! My tables are pretty close in height. I have had instances where they weren't, and to even out the lamp height I would place books underneath it. There are also lifts that you can buy for lamps. Thanks so much for visiting! I hope that you have a wonderful week ahead!
First…your daughter is beautiful inside and out and congratulations on her exceptional accomplishments .
Kudos to you and your husband for her upbringing. I know we do what we can to instill all the right values and ethics, but in the end it is up to the child to apply it all to their own lives in their own way.
Shannon I love your different pieces. I, too have a collected look made up of pieces that I love, not necessarily pieces that match. Actually, I grew out of the matchy-matchy phase in everything many years ago. (I used to have matching shoes, purse, jewelry etc and now I do the opposite. LOL Your walls are a beautiful shade/color and the find at Dilliards for your curtains and bedding was a lucky find. I never apologize for choices I have made regarding my styling decor if it truly is something I appreciate and love. You have done a great job on your bedroom. It looks so welcoming and cozy. Stay cool my friend, and enjoy the remainder of Summer.
Thank you so much, Kari! I hope that you have a wonderful week ahead!
